One of our other friends exclaimed 'Wow, you hugged a witch doctor? Scratch that one off the bucket list!' We all laughed. Our friend also told us about having gone to do home visits and pray with people, later discovering one of the people she had met with, prayed with, laughed with, and hugged upon leaving was in fact a local witch doctor. It was wonderful hearing how these Philippine women had come early in the day and stayed late in the afternoon and even theВ evening to enjoy learning and crocheting and creating hats together.

I had taught my crochet skills to the missions team before they left so I felt a connection to the group and the trip through that.

The community was very near a landfill full of these and it was a way to minister to these women using a completelyВ inexpensive material they had very on-hand. One of the ministries had been teaching the women to create crocheted rugs, window treatments, hats, and even purses out of plastic grocery bags. Now she was speaking of it with more vigor and excitement than I had ever seen her speak about anything before! This had been her first international mission trip and she had thought long and hard before surrendering to do this thing she felt certain God had asked her to do. She had gone with a group from her church to minister in the Philippines. Last night we had the honor of visiting with some friends and hearing about an exciting missions adventure one had been able to experience since we'd last visited. and when I'm always looking for the next glimpse of glory, I slow and enter. I just have to pay attention to Him in the moment -В 'this is the only way to slow time: When I fully enter time's swift current, enter into the current moment with the weight of all my attention. True, I may not think I really ever have the time to sit back and pay attention to God in the moments, but just as Ann Voskamp says, I don't have to.

True, I have many more places to go and many more things to do in my day than does the common household pet, but can I afford to rush through it all? Time seems to move so fast that we must move fast with it, but can we afford to? Can we afford to live fast, always longing for and movingВ toward (andВ even living for)В the 'next big thing' if we are missing the gifts God gives usВ in the moments? It turns out I was throwing it away.' In our rushing, bulls in china shops, we break our own lives.' In living in the rush, I am not only missing the moments, I am wrecking the moments. Through all that haste I thought I was making up time. a thousand broken and missing things, tens of thousands, lie in the wake of all the rushing. or is it?ДЄ few things struck me today in reading Ann Voskamp's One Thousand Gifts - she shared about what a pastor friend had said after being asked about his most profound regret in life: ''Being in a hurry. Her daily labor consists of watching for her (sometimes) loving owners to awaken and take her out before rushing off to work, then laying back and barking at anyone who would dare walk within visual range of her house, then watch for her owners to come home and take her out again a few times while alsoВ (sometimes) spending a few fun moments with her before relaxing to sleep later that night. Now, granted, my dog is not a teacher or even a worker. gifts that I feel very thankful to be able to see this morning. Today I feel able to take the time to thank God in this moment -В for all the green I see, for the sun shining in the cool of the morning, for the scampering squirrels showing me the beauty of the everyday, for the taste of peach preserves (or is it really apple butter?) on waffles, for feeling the baby wiggling inside me asВ I watch the wonder of the now,В for a good dog and a good book and a good home and a good life - and a Good Friday. Today it is not hard to share this quiet, peaceful moment with her, for today I am living it with her. Today as I eat my breakfast I lean back in a comfortable chair and watch my dog laying out in the cool morning sun of our backyard. Today I eat my breakfast in the sunroom, Eggo waffles with cannedВ peach preserves that taste like apple butter and a glass of orange juice, cool and flavorful on my tongue. Unlike many and most Fridays, today I am not teaching. Seeing her out there, mouth open, tongue draped out over her lower jaw for all the world to see as it shakes back and forth with her breathing, I wonder why I don't live that way as well.
